New Form I-9? USCIS proposes changes to the employment eligibility verification form
U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) recently proposed changes that will aim to minimize technical errors while helping customers to complete the Form I-9 on their computers.
According to USCIS, the enhancements will include, among various other changes, checks to ensure information is entered into certain fields correctly; additional spaces to enter multiple preparers and translators; and a quick-response matrix barcode, or QR code, that generates once the form is printed that can be used to streamline audit processes.
At this time, USCIS is seeking comments on the proposed changes. The public will have until April 27, 2016 to submit comments on the changes. To view the proposed form and instructions, go to the Form I-9 notice at https://www.regulations.gov/ and enter 1615-0047 in the search box. To submit a comment, include the agency name and the OMB Control Number 1615-0047 in your comment, then send the comment to the OMB USCIS Desk Officer at oira_submission@omb.eop.gov. You may also submit comments via fax at (202) 395-5806 (This is not a toll-free number).
Until the Office of Management and Budget approves any revised version of the Form I-9 and the form is posted by the USCIS, employers should continue to use the current version of the form, despite the fact that this version of the form was set to expire on March 31, 2016.
